Homelessness; Chinese Cooking in Hawaii Cookbook; FEMA’s Preparing New Flood Plain Maps on the Big Island
The enforcement effort to begin to clear out homeless people in Kakaako started yesterday. Some in the smaller area first targeted have already gone to shelters, but with the majority of the Kakaako encampment still intact, are there agencies and organizations who should be helping to take action? We called OHA to ask for their stance, but they declined to comment. We also called UH Center for Hawaiian Studies professor Jon Osorio and he joined the show to share his thoughts. Jon Osorio teaches at the Center for Hawaiian Studies and has developed and taught classes in history, literature, law as culture, music as historical texts, and research methodologies for and from indigenous peoples. His most recent publication is The Value of Hawaii: Knowing the Past and Shaping the Future.

Chinese Cooking in Hawaii Cookbook: Lynette Lo Tom
Love of food is so often tied to love of family, and so many of our happiest family memories are tied to home-cooked meals and family members who shared their love through the meals they prepared. Lynette Lo Tom grew up in just such a family, cooking Chinese dishes with an island twist, as she describes them. The results are in her new book, “A Chinese Kitchen,” which has just come out from Mutual Publishing. She’ll be signing copies, along with her mother, Lorna Lo, at Mutual’s Center Street offices in Honolulu on September 16th.

FEMA’s Preparing New Flood Plain Maps on the Big Island: Eric Simmons
A few weeks ago, Hawaii County got a look at new flood maps created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Substantial changes to the flood zones now have serious insurance implications for property owners who previously didn't have to buy insurance. There are still some days left in the public comment period though. FEMA Region 9 Senior Engineer Eric Simmons led the project. He joined the show from his office in Oakland to talk about the new maps and their implications.
