Affordable Accessory Dwellings: Don Couch
Statewide, Hawaii’s housing needs continue to outpace the available inventory, especially in the affordable rental category, and building rentals at a rate to catch up isn’t happening. That’s putting most of the state in the position of having to find creative ways to augment the supply. That could include affordable accessory dwellings. On Friday, the Maui County Council will consider a bill to amend the county’s residential zoning ordinance to allow ohana units. Council member Don Couch is chair of the Planning Committee and joined the show to share his thoughts on the bill.

Jack Cione could tell you some stories. For decades, he was the reigning impresario of the naughtier side of Hawaii nightlife, presiding over glitzy, risqué entertainment at a dozen nightclubs. He’s retired now, but you couldn’t have a Hawaii Burlesque Festival & Revue without him and his lurid memories. He’s reliving some of them tomorrow evening at the Honolulu Museum of Art in a Talk Story session called From Pineapples to Pasties: Talking Story about Hawai‘i's Scandalous Burlesque History.
