NextEra Energy and the subsidiaries of Hawaiian Electric Industries released their merger commitments late yesterday. Of the 85 commitments, 53 are new. They range from consumer cost savings over the first five years to smart grid improvements, management, and oversight to charitable contributions. The promises are part of the filing with the Public Utilities Commission and come just a few days from the start of statewide public meetings. But House Representative Chris Lee isn’t convinced. He has been vocal in his opposition to the Next Era deal.

It’s fun to follow theatrical productions from the casting stage through to the finished product because at that early stage it’s little more than a text and a gleam in the director’s eye.   The director in this case is John Wat who’s putting together a production of a new play called My Boy He Play Ball by Tammy Haili’?pua Baker.   It’s the story of a local boy - a gifted young athlete - who’s living a dream until he starts to wonder just whose dream it is. Open auditions for the play will be held this Saturday and Sunday at Kumu Kahua Theatre in downtown Honolulu.

At one time, day to day parenting was almost always led by a mom. Over the past decades, parenting has been changing that dynamic with the attention shifting to the role of fathers. Tomorrow, the Hawaii State Commission on Fatherhood will release a benchmark report compiled in conjunction with the UH Center on the Family. Chet Adessa is the Hawaii State Commission on Fatherhood Chairperson and he joined the show to highlight some of the report’s findings. The State of Fathers in the State of Hawaii will be released tomorrow at 11am during the Keiki Caucus Meeting in room 229 at the state Capitol.
