Update on Father and Homeless Paradise Project: Diana Kim
Many of us talk about homelessness, but few of us watch a family member live through it. Not so in Diana Kim’s family. When we met her a year ago, she was monitoring her father’s movements in the area of East Honolulu he called home. He was malnourished and mentally ill and often didn’t even know her. A heart attack that landed him in hospital changed all that. He got medical treatment and he’s now off the streets and looking for a job. Meanwhile Diana Kim’s project to document her father’s situation and the plight of homeless people like him has turned to advocacy.

Magical Realms of Dragons & Trolls: Dan Kelin
Small children love to take on roles, create characters and situations, and live in a world of the imagination. It’s as if they all have a little bit of theatre inside them. Channeling that energy is something else entirely, though, and that’s where drama education comes in. Daniel Kelin has faced that challenge for some thirty seasons now, as Director of Drama Education for the Honolulu Theatre for Youth. HTY is currently recruiting students for fall classes with the theme Magical Realms of Dragons & Trolls.

Cesspools: Councilwoman Gladys Baisa
There’s no denying it, cesspools are messy business... and our state would know. Hawaii is still the only state that allows the construction of new cesspools. There are about 90 thousand in Hawaii yet despite environmental concerns, efforts to ban them have fallen flat. But this year, the state provided a nudge in the form of a tax credit of up to 10 thousand dollars to convert a cesspool if it’s within 200 feet of the ocean, stream, wetland or drinking water source. That might sound pretty good, although cesspool conversion can cost 10 to 30 thousand dollars. Over this month, a series of statewide meetings is making the rounds to talk up the Department of Health’s proposal for a ban. The Maui meetings just finished this week and we called Maui County Council Water Resources Chair Gladys Baisa to gauge the response.
