Bee Population Returning: Anthony Maxfield
Avocado, Lychee, and Macadamia are three trees highly dependent on bees for pollination and since 2007, pollination has been challenging. That was the year the varroa mite was found on Oahu. The mite later spread to Hawaii Island. Since then, the bees and the harvests that depend on them have felt the effect of the parasite... and so have prices for bee products, fruit, and vegetables. But this year anecdotal stories of greater swarms have made some people wonder... are the bees coming back? We called Anthony Maxfield, President of the Hawaii Beekeepers Association, and asked him for his take.

Music has changed mightily since the days when Roger McGuinn began his career as a folk-styled guitar and vocal sideman with the Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin. His career marked the rise of the singer-songwriter and the growing role of music as an instrument of social change. In recent decades, he has seen the collapse of the music business that brought him fame as a founding member of the Byrds, but he has continued writing, playing, and performing through it all. Roger McGuinn will perform tomorrow evening at Honolulu’s Hawaii Thteater, Friday evening at the Palace Theatre in Hilo, Saturday at the People’s Theater in Honoka’a, and next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Iao Theater in Wailuku, Maui.

Bill 78, Pcards, and Squatter Issues: Councilman Greggor Ilagan
Pcards, or credit cards issued to public officials for use in transacting public business, came under scrutiny earlier this year. You'll remember that was after the discovery of Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi’s misuse of his card. Since then, the County Council has heard a legislative auditor’s recommendations and today it will consider Councilman Gregor Ilagan’s bill to clarify what public purpose really means and under what circumstances a Pcard should be used. There may also be some conversation about squatters following Friday’s arrests in Councilman Ilagan’s Puna district. Greggor Ilagan joined the show via phone to share his thoughts.

Our Future Is Female: Na`ai New Light
Can the world be saved through an infusion of female energy? Are there lessons we can learn from centuries-old tribal practices that could re-direct the future and guide us on a path to peace? Na’ai New Light is a retired school administrator who has devoted a couple of years’ worth of research to a theory she’ll be expanding on tonight in a lecture in Kihei, Maui. It’s called “Our Future Is Female: How Women and Men Will Save the World” and she joined the show via phone to tell us about it.
