The music of Brazil came to American audiences at the just the right time a few decades back, offering novel harmonies, melodies and rhythms just when they were needed most. Composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa spoke a musical language that was just different enough -- even as it gave us melodies that were immediately accessible to added American ears. It’s the music Sandy Tsukiyama feel in love with a long time ago - and her years off immersion in Brazilian music have given her approach to it an authenticity that is all too rare. She’s returning to the world of performing with a regular stint at a Honolulu jazz club, and she’s with us this morning in our studio.

Palolo Valley Violence: Ann Kobayashi
Palolo valley is no stranger to violence and crime. It's had its reputation as a rough neighborhood for decades. In recent months, violent assaults and a shooting have again focused attention on Palolo- and a plan for a peace march next month. Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi represents District 5 which includes Palolo Valley and she's with us this morning.
