How to help homeless people enter a conduit to permanent housing often starts with a shelter. On Maui, the Ho'omoana Foundation thinks that temporary shelter could be a campsite on a plot of private land near the entrance to Lahaina. Homeowners in the area don't like the idea and fought the proposal. Last month, the Maui Planning Commission gave the Foundation 60 days to engage the community and work it out, though many homeowners including the one we talked with on this program last week would just like the proposal to move elsewhere. We thought we would check in with the Ho'omoana Foundation to get an update on its progress. Lisa Darcy is foundation's Executive Director and she joined the show via phone.

By this point, you've likely seen the Planned Parenthood sting videos made public by the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress. The initial video showed a Planned Parenthood official lunching and discussing the sale of fetal tissue to representatives from a purported research company. As we went into last weekend, a letter released by a U.S. House of Representatives committee targeted several officials from the women's health organization and three biomedical companies for investigation.  Today, Christine Charbonneau, the regional head of the newly merged Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands is in Honolulu and she joined us in our studios.

People from all over the world have made new lives for themselves in Hawai‘i… it’s that kind of place.   But the term “melting pot” is inexact - it implies a loss of identity – and Hawaii’s many different cultures have done much to keep their values, religion, and customs alive.   Itamar Eichner is a reporter for Yediot Ahronot, the leading newspaper in Israel, who has been in Hawaii to write a piece about Jewish life in the islands.  He joined us to talk about what he’s seen so far.
