Suicide Prevention: Sgt. Kevin Briggs
Some places are known for their reputations to aid suicide. San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge fits into that category and few know that as well as Kevin Briggs. In his long career with the California Highway Patrol he spent a lot of time watching over the southern end of the bridge, taking on the unexpected role of a suicide prevention counselor. Often called the Guardian of the Golden Gate, he has talked several hundred people out of ending their lives. He spoke about it in last year’s TEDtalks to try to demonstrate that listening well can mean the difference between life and death.

Every Peter Yarrow performance carries a message, and it has been that way for more than fifty years. This is the man who, as part of the hugely popular folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, sang Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” for a quarter million people at the 1963 March on Washington, just before Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Folk musicians of his generation look at social engagement as an essential part of their music. Peter’s coming to town, and he joined the show to tell us more about his visit.
