Our first conversation looks at a 140 year tradition on Maui that opponents say needs to stop. Generations have grown up watching the practice of cane burning from spring through fall and have reported they feel its effects. Now after last week's fire that smoked the Kamali’i Elementary School campus, community activists question how the state can continue to give Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Co. permits to burn. Joe Ritter, PhD, is a Physicist whose expertise includes biochemistry, birth defects and aerosol physics. He joined the show with his thoughts on the practice of cane burning.

33rd Annual Hula Exhibition: Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza
Kumu Hula Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza believes that her halau’s music and dance should reflect its place of origin – Kaua’i. Her halau is Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani and she’s preparing her dancers for Kauai’s 33rd Annual Hula Exhibition this weekend. She joined the show via phone to tell us about it.

Delays in Implementing GMO Moratorium on Maui: Mark Sheehan
From the beginning, the initiative to create a GMO moratorium on Maui faced opposition. Supporters knew it would. They expected the Maui biotech industry to sue after the question passed last November... and it did. Since then, the moratorium has languished - a public decision without implementation held up by suits and counter suits. Mark Sheehan of the SHAKA Movement was one of 5 Maui residents who initiated the original petition and he joined the show to update us on the situation.

Atherton Concert: Maryanne Ito
Maryanne Ito’s music gets categorized as “neo-soul,” and that’s probably as good a way as any to describe it. The young singer’s music, like all good music, goes beyond category. You’ll hear reggae, hip-hop, and classic soul influences in the mix, but mostly what you’ll hear is raw emotion. That’s what has given her latest recordings an international audience. She’s at an exciting phase of her career and will be performing in our Atherton Studio this weekend.
