Waikiki Beach Replenishment: Rick Egged
Waikiki now has a plan to bring back the sand. This week, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed bills 81 & 82 creating a special improvement district. It's a mechanism for replenishing the beach and paying for other special projects. So when should Waikiki businesses expect to pay the new assessment and how will the project be managed? Rick Egged is the President of the Waikiki improvement Association and he joined the show to give an update.

Bishop Museum Fishhooks: Mara Mulrooney
To anthropologists, ancient artifacts can tell a complex story. Each new find offers clues to the past from which a trained observer can learn much about the way people lived and worked, and how cultural influences spread over a wide geographical area. Dr. Mara Mulrooney of the Bishop Museum’s field of study is the Pacific, and the Museum has assembled a digital archive of the world’s largest collection of Hawaiian fishhooks. She’s joined the show to tell us what we can learn from those deceptively simple clues.

17th Annual Roll Call of Honor In Remembrance Ceremony: Noelle Kahanu
This weekend’s Memorial Day observances will be filled with stories that should not be forgotten. Our remembrances ensure that the meaning of their sacrifice will not be lost on future generations. One such story tells of 130 young men of Hawai‘i who were sent to remote Pacific Islands in the years leading up to the Second World War. Their job was to take weather readings, collect specimens for Bishop Museum, prepare landing strips, and keep daily logs. Hui Panala’au’s mission was a secret, and technically, its young men were civilian employees of the Department of the Interior. Their risks, and their sacrifice, are being remembered this Sunday at the 17th Annual Roll Call of Honor in Remembrance Ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. The oldest living survivor of Hui Panala’au, George Kahanu Senior, is flying in from Maui and his granddaughter, Noelle, joined the show to tell us his story.
