Dr. Jim Spira

If you've ever had a serious illness you know how important it was to get the right diagnosis. With many conditions having symptoms that mimic each other, that can be hard to do... and that has been especially true in differentiating PTSD and traumatic brain injury. A recent study may have the key. It used Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography to look at cerebral blood flow and indirectly at the brain activity of a group of veterans. Dr Jim Spira is the Director of the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, for the Pacific Islands Division of the Department of Veterans Affairs. He had a look at the study and joined the show to walk us through it.

If you’re going to give visitors the essence of Honolulu’s Chinatown the way it was back in the day, your story had better be for “adults only.”   Thousands of GI’s came here during the second World War in search of the forbidden and it was available to them in ways they never could have imagined.  Carter Churchfield offers walking tours of Honolulu’s red-light district for visitors 18 and over because for her, that’s the best way to get to the heart of this part of town.
