A report last week from NOAA showed the amount of carbon dioxide reached 400 parts per million in March - the highest global level on record. Samples taken from 40 areas were analyzed at the NOAA center in Boulder, Colorado and levels are expected to peak this month. So what does the new record mean to climatologists - and the rest of us? UH Manoa Professor of Oceanography Axel Timmermann is a researcher at the UH International Pacific Research Center and he joined the show with some explanation.

You probably know of the heroism of the Nisei soldiers who signed up to fight for their country during the Second World War – the soldiers of the hundredth infantry battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat team. What many people may not know is what those soldiers faced over there. The French government does and in January of this year 18 Maui World War II veterans were named Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur – that country’s highest honor.   Maui’s Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, and Maui's Sons and Daughters of Nisei Veterans have created an exhibit to keep these heroes’ stories alive and we talked with Dave Fukuda, its co-chair.

It’s not hard to understand why young singers gravitate to the music of past generations -- there are just so many inspiring examples.   For Kyle Allen McCarty, role models were all around when he was growing up and today, the 23-year old Air Force senior airman is an old school soul singer who’s just back from a 19 nation tour with the Air Force’s Elite Tops in Blue show band.  He’s a featured vocalist in this Saturday’s Sweet Soul Music Concert, and he joined us this morning for a preview.

  • Intro Music:  Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) by Marvin Gaye
  • Outro Music: Sweet Soul Music by Arthur Conley
