The portrait of life in a 1950's mental institution came to life in Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and chances are you've read it. As a new production of the play is ready to debut at MVT, how close is that version of a long ago reality to what happens today in the world of institutional psychiatry? Neuropsychologist and past president of the Hawaii Psychological Association, Tanya D'Avanzo, joined the show for a comparison.

People in power are quick to label those who oppose them as lunatics and in society’s eyes, there’s a fine line between the madman and the rebel. In the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Randle P. McMurphy is the iconoclast who drives the action of the drama and pays the price rebels so often pay. Kevin Keaveney plays him in the upcoming Mano’a Valley Theatre production.

Lola Love is the author and producer of Neon Dreams: A Black Light Theatrical Production Exploring The ABC's of Sex.
