At least for the moment, the days of what Hawaii’s government can do for your nonprofit are past. The 2015 legislative session is over, and now some organizations are focusing on what they can do for themselves. But Kuakini Hospital has already been at that task. Last year, it entered into an energy savings agreement that provided a third party financed PV system. Kuakini Hospital recently received its 6 month energy report. For a $5.8 million PV system managed by the ESA, actual savings were $448,197. And that’s just the money… energy savings in kWh, was 9% better than the estimate. Duane Ashimine is the President & COO of Energy Industries Corporation, the company which did the Kuakini installation and he joined the show to talk about the benefits of an ESA.

If you’re looking for encouragement about where the world is going, you can find it by looking at some of the hundreds of videos gathered by ‘Olelo for its Youth XChange Video Awards competition.   They’re an exciting sign of a new generation’s familiarity with the tools of visual media, but there’s something far more important going on as well – a wealth of compassion and social engagement.   Beau Nakamori, a senior at Moanalua High School, is the director of one of the winning projects, “Many Rivers, One Ocean,” and he joined us this morning in-studio.

Hemp Bill: Simon Russell

At the beginning of the legislative session, hemp supporters thought last year’s enthusiasm might have translated into a bill to expand cultivation and testing. They were almost right.  It came down to the wire with the conference committee pushing discussion to the next day, and then the next... then abruptly, the bill died. So where does this leave farmers who had been looking at hemp as their next gold crop?  Hawaii Farmers Union United Vice President and Legislative Chairman, Simon Russell, is pondering that question... and he joined the show to share his thoughts.
