Emergent Workforce Expert: Carleen MacKay
Carleen MacKay speaks about U.S. workplace change and workforce challenges created by globalization and disruptive technologies. That would include the future of work, in a world where jobs have (increasingly) become only one way of working. She is the author of The Playbook Series of workforce strategies for the 21st century and She will speak in Honolulu this summer at the international intergenerational conference hosted by Generations United, Japan's NGO Council on Aging, International Consortium of Intergenerational Programmes, UNA-Hawai‘i, and Seagull Schools.

Appomattox, Civil War History: Justin Vance
Justin Vance is an Associate Professor of History at Hawai‘i Pacific University. He's an organizer of Hawaii’s participation in a national event called “Bells across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox." It will commemorate the anniversary of the meeting of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee that brought a formal end to the war. On Thursday at 9:15 a.m., Our Lady of Peace will ring its bells for 4 minutes, along with thousands of others across the nation.

SB737, Payday Loans Bill: Jeff Gilbreath
Imagine needing short term cash so badly that an APR of 459% looks good. For many families living paycheck to paycheck, payday loans at usurious rates often become a necessity and a trap pay cycle after pay cycle. That would change if a bill awaiting a hearing continues to advance. SB737 would cap the rate at 36% making Hawaii the 19th state to do so. Jeff Gilbreath is the Executive Director of Hawaiian Community Assets and is advocating for the measure.

Hanamatsuri Flower Festival: Maya Hara
Maya Hara is an ordained Buddhist minister and a member of the Lahaina Jodo Mission, which will celebrate Shakyamuni Buddha’s birth with a Hanamatsuri or Flower Festival on Sunday at 9:30AM. The observance is co-sponsored by the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, Lahaina Shingon Mission, and Lahaina Jodo Mission. It’s open to the public.
