Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary: Frazer McGilvray
Changes could be coming to the management plan and size of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Last week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - NOAA - announced the draft rule change and environmental impact statement. Both are part of a periodic review of the sanctuary that was created by Congress in 1992. The updated plan is a collaborative effort - including with the community group, Malama Maunalua. Frazer McGilvray is the Executive Director of Malama Maunalua and he joined the show in our studios to talk about the potential expansion.

Donia Lilly is the organizer of the Kauai Art Tour, an open-studio tour that runs through the month of April. The first weekend, April 18th and 19th, will highlight artists on the South and West side, and the following weekend will feature artists on the North and East sides. There’s a preview show that opens Thursday evening and runs all month at KSA Gallery in Kukui Grove.

SB913, SD1, Data Collection During Inmate Intake: Kat Brady
When an offender goes to jail, he or she is of course separated from loved ones. But when those people are children under the age of 18, the separation can have lasting effects... and not good ones. According to University of California sociologist Kristin Turney, children of incarcerated parents face significant health challenges. In some cases these health challenges are more detrimental than the effects of divorce or parental death. A bill up for hearing today looks to mitigate those risks by requiring the department of public safety to collect data during the intake of an inmate. Longtime prison reform advocate Kat Brady joined the show to review the bill.

National Tropical Botanical Garden: Tim Flynn
Tim Flynn is the Collections Manager for the national tropical botanical garden, which will continue its display of artist Sydney Parkinson’s painting of the plants of the society Islands – paintings made from plants collected during the 1768-1771 voyage of the HMS Endeavour, under the command of Captain James Cook. It’s at the Juliet Rice Wichman Botanical Research Center in Kal?heo.
