SB375 and Industrial Hemp Home: Vincent Mina
At the end of the last legislative session, former Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a bill into law to start a two year pilot program to grow industrial hemp for biofuel stock. Cultivation through the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources was in line with the requirements of the 2014 federal farm bill. This year, farmers are wondering if the state parameters will be augmented come the end of session. A bill to expand how hemp can be grown, regulated and tested was introduced this session... just as construction on the first house in Hawaii to contain hemp insulation is beginning in Kihei. Vincent Mina is the President of the State Board & Maui Board of Directors of Hawaii Farmers Union United, and he joined the show with his thoughts on SB375.

Singing the Diaphragm Blues: Rebecca Lea McCarthy

Rebecca Lea McCarthy has taken on the ultimate theatrical challenge with her show “Singing the Diaphragm Blues.” She’s performing it February 12th through 14th in downtown Honolulu at the Ong King Arts Center.

Overview of HB728, SB475, and Sunshine Bills: Brian Black
This legislative session, over 50 bills focus on Hawaii’s sunshine law and access to public records. There are a number of companion bills in each chamber. What also may account for some of that high number is how many people are grappling with open records and meetings. Brian Black is the President and Executive Director of The Civil Beat Law Center for the Public Interest. He’s had a look at all the bills and sorted them into three categories... the potentially good; the bad; and the downright ugly. He joined the show with an explanation of each.

Sex Writing Workshop: Laura Lentz
It’s not easy writing about sex. It’s a subject that has baffled some great writers, and brought out the worst in some bad ones. Hemingway got laughed at when he made the earth move in For Whom the Bell Tolls… DH Lawrence got labeled a pornographer… the list goes on. Laura Lentz is a writing coach who acts as host of weekly writing workshops in Kilauea, Kauai, and she’s asking would-be authors to explore the way they write about sex.
