You probably look to the corporate world to judge how well women in the workplace are faring. Some industries may have cracks in their glass ceilings and many small business owners are women. But what about the progress of women in the clergy? Christine DiGiacomo is the Executive Director of PastorWoman Corp and has been tracking the progress of female clergy around the country. She joined us by phone from her office in San Clamente to talk about how Hawaii stacks up. More info.

Jazz Speak: Duane Padilla & Shoji Ledward
Jazz musicians look so intent when they’re playing, and audiences often find themselves wondering what they’re thinking… or maybe even if they’re thinking at all. Is jazz improvisation a mystical process beyond intellect or is there a lot of hidden communication going on? Duane Padilla, violinist, and Shoji Ledward, guitarist, have set out to de-mystify jazz with Jazz Speak. Duane and Shoji joined us in studio to play a sample.

MLK Day: Father Walter Brownridge
If you’re home on this Martin Luther King Day, you may know a little of why the celebration of a man assassinated 47 years ago is a national holiday. But would you put a ride along with Memphis sanitation workers into the conversation? The Dean of Honolulu’s Cathedral of St. Andrew wanted us to do just that. Specifically, the Very Reverend Walter Brownridge wanted to us remember that MLK had been in Memphis to lend support to the 1,300 garbage workers who walked off the job in 1968 to stand up for their decency and dignity. A few weeks ago, Dean Brownridge asked to go riding with Honolulu sanitation workers this morning and was refused. The city cited liability reasons... so he came to our studio early this morning instead and we sat down to talk about it.

Mobile Technology: Brett Oppegaard
Smartphones have taken over the world, to become the indispensable gizmo of a thousand uses – one that’s even finding its way into America’s wilderness. Brett Oppegaard is a UH professor who has developed an app, now in use in Yellowstone National Park, that tells the user when old faithful is next going to erupt. Another app revisits a historical event through the eyes of those most effected. Both are part of a communications revolution brought about by mobile technology, and Brett joined us this morning in studio.
