The lava oozed, the lava languished... and after 6 months of being the object of scrutiny, the lava will also be the subject of several bills introduced in the 2015 legislative session. State Senator Russell Ruderman wants the bills to provide insurance help for affected homeowners with moratoriums on their policies. Other bills would offer some cash relief for the Puna Community Medical Center and two charter schools. Additional emergency access - a harbor and an airstrip - could also be created under another of the bills. State senator Russell Ruderman joined the show to tell us more about these bills and their intended purpose.

The Walt Disney studio is making a new animated movie set in Hawaii, scheduled to come out in 2016.  Its lead character, Moana, is described this way:  “the film will follow the journey of a spirited teenager named Moana as she sails the Pacific Ocean to complete her "ancestor's quest."   It’s a perfect role for a singing, ukulele-playing Island girl – and Emily Abrigo, already a seasoned performer with her family band the Abrigo ‘Ohana, knew it was for her.   She made an audition tape for Disney and she’s hoping for the best.

When Hawaii's 2015 legislative session convenes, the state's GOP caucus will have one fewer member. Last week, Representative Aaron Johanson announced he has switched parties. With his defection comes a reorganization of Republican leadership. Representative Beth Fukumoto Chang is now Minority Leader and she joined us to discuss the implications of party switching in Hawai‘i.

It’s all happening fast for 13-year old ukulele prodigy, Aidan James, with a role on Hawaii 5-0, concert tours, and a new CD… but it’s not as if he hasn’t been preparing for it.   He’s been a regular performer on Hawaii stages since he was 8, and now he’s at that enviable place - the table is set, the audience is there, and the rest is up to him. Aidan James has just released his first CD, an extended-play recording called “Live Again,” and he joined us in studio to play some tracks off of it.
