Choosing Wisely: Hawaii Pacific Health VP, Melinda Ashton
Many of the choices made in a medical setting are dictated by long-established protocols. A given set of symptoms triggers a corresponding series of tests… some of them unnecessary, some of them risky. Hawaii Pacific Health, the local provider that includes Straub, Wilcox, Pali Momi, and Kapiolani Hospitals, is implementing a program called Choosing Wisely that asks doctors and their patients to look at a new set of guidelines for medical tests. Dr. Melinda Ashton is the Vice President for Patient Safety and Quality Services for Hawaii Pacific Health, and she joined us this morning for a closer look at Choosing Wisely.

World Conservation Congress: Randy Tanaka
The World Conservation Congress is referred to as “The Olympics of Conservation.” For the first time in its 66-year history, it is going to be hosted by the United States in Honolulu. Government leaders and grassroots activists will be converging here to hammer out solutions to the world’s most pressing conservation problems. That won’t be until September 2016. So why are preparations getting underway right now? That is the central question we’ll take up with Randy Tanaka. He’s the newly appointed Executive Director of the Host Committee for the World Conservation Congress and he took time on the last day of the year to join us in-studio.

It’s troubling to see the popular media trivialize prostitution. Think of the hit movie “Pretty Woman” and compare that character to the reality on the street. The women you see there are not “happy hookers” – they’re victims of what Kathryn Xian, a human rights activist, calls “modern-day slavery.” States around the country are starting to recognize the full extent of human trafficking and pass laws directed at it, but how effective are they… and how does Hawaii stack up?

Fiji’s First Modern Dance Troupe: Peter Espiritu
Modern dance arose at about the turn of the last century in Europe and the United States by challenging the restrictions of classical ballet. Ever since, it’s been all about innovation. Peter Rockford Espiritu is Hawaii’s homegrown master of modern dance art. He is famed for infusing it with body moves from his own Samoan-Hawaiian and Asian roots. Three years ago he took a big leap to Fiji, where he founded an eclectic dance troupe. In February, he will be leading the group on tour in those same European cities that birthed modern dance long ago. Before the globetrotting began, he joined us in-studio.
