In a year that has seen its share of racial tension over our police and criminal justice systems, has Hawaii remained immune? Last week’s overturning of a manslaughter sentence because of a prosecutor’s comment to a jury raises some troubling questions and UH Law professor Ken Lawson is on hand to address them.

Council Appeal of GMO Ruling: Councilwoman Margaret Wille
There’s an apparent disconnect in Hawaii over the GMO issue — an apparent conflict between what voters want and what the courts will allow. Hawaii County’s latest attempt to restrict genetically modified crops on Hawaii Island has been struck down by a federal court — and the County Council has voted 5 to 4 to appeal the ruling. Councilmember Margaret Wille is the author of the original bill and the spearhead of the appeal, which she says in important test of home rule.
