Hawai‘i Ranked as #1 Most Healthy State: Keith Yamamoto
This week we got the news that for the second year in a row that Hawaii got the blue ribbon in the America’s Health Ranking. Also this week, WalletHub released its Most Active Cities Report, pegging Honolulu at number 24 out of the 100 largest cities considered in the survey. Being in the top 25% is great, but it’s far from the first place of the states ranking. We called Acting Director of the State Department of Health, Keith Yamamoto and I asked him how we can have both of those ratings, given how much we talk about obesity in children.

CIA Torture Report: Carlos Juarez
This week a Senate Intelligence Committee report acknowledged what some, including Senator John McCain, have been saying for quite a while: torture is not effective. The voluminous CIA documents used to come to that conclusion contradict what the public has been told since the Sept 11 attacks... and TV and films often glorify enhanced interrogation by appearing to yield results. If you watch Homeland, were devoted to 24, or saw Zero Dark Thirty, you know torture frequently comes off as the big hero. So now the question is if torture doesn’t work, what does? Hawaii Pacific University Professor, Carlos Juárez, joined the show with his perspective.

Holidays are a celebration of home and family, and sometimes the songs and images that celebrate them can be a cruel reminder, to those who don’t have a place to live, of what they don’t have. The Honolulu Habitat for Humanity is asking us to think about those people, and what can be done to help them, with its 1st Annual “Kids Build: Gingerbread Homes” celebration. Habitat for Humanity’s LaakeaLaano joined the show to tell us about it.
