The holidays bring plenty of holiday shopping and for many of you, a certain kind of shopping: the iPhone kind. It can be an almost religious ritual for some people... the kind who’d rather stand in the long lines than not have the right gift, iPhones or otherwise. Although the products you may be after may differ, the reason may be the same - you may be part of a consumerist cult that goes beyond mere marketing. Our social scientist in residence, Neal Milner takes a look in today’s long view.

Hawaii is a treasure trove of military history’s artifacts - a collection that’s especially rich where the Pacific War was concerned. Hawaii was a nerve center for a conflict that covered a third of the globe during the 1940’s and Bryant Neal, curator of a new exhibit at the Story of Hawaii Museum in Wailuku, Maui, has come upon wartime archival material the public has never seen before. Bill 81 & 82, Proposed Waikiki Tax to Protect Beaches: Rick Egged
Later today, the Honolulu City Council will consider two bills that could lead to Waikiki businesses paying a special tax. Normally that would be enough to draw fire, but this time, many businesses are saying they are okay with it. The tax would be based on the assessed property value of a businesses and go to support the ongoing restoration of the beach. Rick Egged is the President of the Waikiki Improvement Association. He joined the show via phone.

“Elf” at Maui OnStage: Alexis Dascoulias
“Elf” the Musical was a Broadway hit a couple of years back, and continues to tour the country, in part because it appeals to the misfit in all of us. Buddy, the title elf, is a kind of stranger in a strange land. His story, and the songs and dances that drive it, give Maui Onstage director Alexis Dascoulias and her cast plenty to work with.
