Rally Mayor Caldwell to Veto Bill 48: Kathy Xian
Last Friday, the Honolulu City Council approved a bill expanding the sit-lie ordinance beyond Waikiki... and Honolulu’s Mayor says he’ll sign it. Advocates for the homeless have said that the ordinance is morally reprehensible and forces the homeless to continually move from place to place. Today activists are planning a rally to attempt to change the Mayor’s mind. They intend to gather at his office to deliver a petition signed by 1100 people opposed to the ban’s extension and a study on Sit-Lie inefficacy in other cities by U.C. Berkeley School of Law. Kathy Xian is one of those activists and she joined the show to share her thoughts on Bill 48.

Ukulele Guild of Hawaii: David Lawrence
It takes skill and dedication to play the ukulele well and it takes at least as much to make one. The instrument’s worldwide popularity is taking off, and with that growth comes a renewed appreciation of the beauty and distinctive sound of a handmade instrument. This Saturday, ukulele aficionados will get a chance to learn how much the luthier’s craft has progressed at the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii’s annual exhibition and conference. David Lawrence is the Guild’s treasurer and he joined us this morning.

Youth Homelessness: Alika Campbell
This week's report on the number of US children who are homeless has rippled through the news services across the country. While its heart wrenching to know 1 in 30 children is homeless, there's a group left out of that statistic: runaway teens. Locally, those not quite kids, not quite adults are squarely the focus of Alika Campbell. He's the Program Coordinator of Hale Kipa's Youth Outreach and Transitional Living Program. Youth Outreach (YO! for short) is a collaboration between Hale Kipa and Waikiki Health and Alika Campbell joined us in-studio this morning.

A lead singer who could hit the high notes, great melodies, harmony vocals, matching suits and precise choreography: for a couple of golden decades, this was the formula for success in American popular music, from the doo-wop of the Fifties through the heyday of Motown and the Four Seasons. That music left its imprint on a great many lives, as the runaway success of the Broadway show “Jersey Boys” reminded us. That wave of nostalgia still has plenty of power left in it, and the “Midtown Men” will be riding it this weekend at the Hawaii Theater. Christian Hoff, Midtown Man and original Jersey Boys cast member, joined the show to talk about it.
