Student Opinion on UH Policy Decisions: Bret Polopolus-Meredith
We're in the middle of the week, but you might remember that it began with a protest at UH Manoa. A couple dozen graduate students protested and marched around campus to get their message across: they're fed up with poor governance and an out of control university budget. They've had a few days to reflect on Monday's activities and what effect their actions may have had on the university's administration. Grad student Bret Polopolus-Meredith was there representing the UH Graduate Student Organization where he's the Employment and Compensation Chair. He's also the treasurer of Fix UH M?noa. Civil Beat will hold a Civil Cafe to talk about “What’s Ailing UH and How To Fix It,” Thursday, Nov. 20 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Fresh Cafe Kaka‘ako.

Child Homelessness: Jason Espero
This week, a stunning statistic filled headlines across the nation: 1 in 30 American children is homeless. That's according to the The American Institutes for Research report, “America's Youngest Outcasts.” Between 2012 and 2013, the number of children experiencing homelessness grew by 8% nationally. In the overall ranking of states, Hawaii placed 9th in the top 10 best list. But that number represents the performance in four areas, including some where Hawaii did less well. Jason Espero, director of Care-A-Van, Waikiki Health’s homeless outreach program joined the show with a look at Hawaii's ranking and how this translates into current and needed services for homeless children.
