We’ve often talked about the fact that the older you are, the more likely you are to vote. In our biweekly segment, The Long View, last time we looked at how the seniors and the elderly vote and how that impacts Democrats and Republicans. Today contributing editor, Neal Milner, is back with something broader: how the changing demographics, especially the large increase in number of people over 85 might affect public policy.

The election battle over whether to impose a moratorium on Maui County GMO cultivation came to an end with the supporters of the measure winning by a 2% margin. While the election results are finished, the actual conflict over GMOs is destined to continue: the Hawaii Crop Improvement Association was one of several local organizations to work for a No vote, and now may challenge the moratorium in court.  Bennette Misalucha is the association’s Executive Director.
