In a few weeks, Hawaii voters will go to the polls. Among the choices they will make, will be who goes to Washington to fill the seat vacated by Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa. As you may remember, we spoke on Town Square with GOP Congressional candidate Charles Djou a few weeks ago, We had also hoped to speak for a hour with Democratic candidate Mark Takai, but none of the dates would work with his schedule, we’re glad he could join us today.

The image of Hawaii as a sleepy tropical paradise persists in some quarters, but we who live here know better. As the editors of a newly launched local magazine remind us, Hawaii became the most literate nation in the world as far back as the 1830’s, and ‘Iolani Palace had electricity before the White House. That forward-thinking tradition is the focus of Summit magazine, a publication that sees Hawaii’s potential as Hawaii as an island state with global aspiration. The reasons why will be on display at SummitFest next weekend, which Ikaika Hussey is putting together.

Tropical Storm Ana Update: Ray Tanabe
There is nothing like a storm threat to mobilize most of us. By now you know that tropical storm Ana is soon to affect our islands. Over the past few days, reports of the storm still had much uncertainty surrounding them. We asked Tom Evans, director of operations for NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center, to set us straight about what we know today. But unfortunately Tom couldn’t join us because he was stuck in a meeting, but we talked to Ray Tanabe, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, instead.

Library Fundraiser: Nainoa Mau
Fundraising calls for resourcefulness, as any non-profit organization knows. Does this sound familiar? It has been a preoccupation for us at HPR lately, and we got to thinking about the ways community organizations can get the word out. NainoaMau, Executive Director of Friends of the Library of Hawai’i, has been exploring some unique fundraising ideas.
