Kakaako Parking, Towing, and Street Ownership Issues: Michael Carroll
What if you were told that on-street parking and the use of the roads adjacent to your business in the middle of Honolulu required you to enter into a lease. You might laugh, but some businesses in Kakaako are caught in what looks like a case where real life is stranger than fiction. These businesses are now suing to eliminate the claims of the Kakaako Land Company, which says it owns the streets and has put up no parking signs in several locations around Kakaako. Attorney Michael Carroll represents the growing list of businesses and he joined the show to talk about the issues and lawsuit.

Hawai‘i Disability Rights Center Lawsuit Regarding Autism: Louis Erteschik
Earlier this month, the Hawaii Disability Rights Center said enough was enough. The organization filed a lawsuit on behalf of a single mom with a severely autistic five year old son. She’d been paying five thousand per month for services that she and the Hawaii Disability Rights Center say are covered under federal Medicaid rules. You might remember that months ago we talked about claims that the state Department of Human Services was ignoring federal rules requiring treatments for the autistic. Today we pick up that conversation with Louis Erteschik, the Executive Director of Hawaii Disability Rights Center.

What if every community had its own forest and made a point of planting trees to rejuvenate it and replace what was lost? It’s a worthy goal, but most of us wouldn’t know just how to bring it about. That’s why the Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative is taking advantage of wiliwili flowering season to provide a little education. The Wiliwili Festival offers free workshops in plant propagation composting, and fire preparedness, among other relevant subjects, with a goal of getting us back out into the woods. Jen Rawson is the coordinator, and she joined us by phone from Hawaii Island. The Festival is this Saturday from 9am-3pm at the Waikoloa Stables in Waikoloa Village.
