Board of Water Supply Billing: Councilmember Pine
Over 16 months ago, the Board of Water Supply’s changes to its billing practices led to woes for thousands of its customers. They were changed and many paid far more than they had ever anticipated. The semi autonomous agency couldn’t handle the customer inquiries and the fiasco led to an audit. Findings were made public earlier this month and this week the City Council held a special session to consider the results. Councilmember Kimberly Pine introduced a charter amendment last year to limit the Board’s ability to “back bill” its customers and she joined the show to talk about it.

Should a metered parking space in a busy city become the site of a public art installation? To many, the answer is yes… and there’s a worldwide initiative in the art world to convert parking spaces into temporary public parks. It’s an effort to get us thinking about how we use public space, and today is Honolulu’s first Parking day. Joel Kurokawa is one of the day-long event’s organizers, and he took time off from setting it up to join The Conversation.

In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill put the spotlight on a region many rarely thought about. It was the largest spill in US history and the Gulf of Mexico is still feeling the effects. As part of the agreements to settle the criminal charges against the companies held responsible - BP Exploration & Production Inc. (BP) and Transocean Deepwater Inc. (Transocean), monies were set aside for a 30 study to monitor the area. That study is now in its initial phases. Dr. David Karl is the Director of the Daniel K. Inouye Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education and helped to shape the vision of the study.

It’s a goal many artists hope to reach -- communicating with audiences on a massive scale, and by touching their hearts, becoming a voice for social justice. From the time she was a teenager singing with her family’s gospel group, the Staples Singers, Mavis Staples has been on the front lines: marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, and performing at countless events dedicated to the cause of freedom. That message has been carried on through the decades, and in recent years, Mavis has produced some of the most powerful “message” songs of her career. She’s coming to the Hawaii Theater, and we got a chance to talk with her the other day . Mavis Staples will perform at the Hawaii Theatre in downtown Honolulu next Wednesday, September 24th, at 7:30pm.
