Toby McLeod is Project Director of Earth Island Institute’s Sacred Land Film Project. He has been working with indigenous communities as a filmmaker, journalist, and photographer for three decades. The four part series Standing on Sacred Ground screens at the UHM Art Auditorium on September 16 and 18.

Recent Land Sales on Kaua`i: Joan Conrow
A lot of land on Kauai now has different ownership. Roughly 1,100 acres of Princeville land owned by The Resort Group was purchased by a multinational company headed by a Thai-Chinese businessman. Pacific Business News calls it one of the first major investments by Chinese investors in Hawai‘i. According to Kauai journalist and blogger, Joan Conrow, that has seemingly flown under the awareness of many people on the island, as has the sale of Jimmy Pflueger’s 383 acre property in advance of a state foreclosure action. Joan Conrow joined the show with her thoughts on the matter.

Srewbuki at Improvaganza: Garrick Paikai
Kabuki, the highly ritualized style of Japanese theater that dates back to the seventeenth century, just begs to be parodied. The elaborate costumes, the stock characters, and the not-entirely-respectable origins of the art form are all grist for the comedy mill. That said, Screwbuki probably had to happen. It’s an improvised kabuki performance, played for laughs, that was first presented 14 years ago. Garrick Paikai is one of the original cast members of Screwbuki. This time around he’ll be directing the ensemble as part of the lineup for the Hawaii “Improvaganza” Improv Festival, running September 25 to 28. The Screwbuki performance is Friday. September 26th at the Arts at Marks Garage.
