The Long View,  Effectiveness of Protests: Neal Milner

If you're of a certain age, protesting may just be in your experiential DNA. Younger generations, too, engage in protests, not trying to slight anyone - but regardless of who protests, how the rest of us regard those demonstrations of anger, upset, and disagreement may surprise you. On the whole, Americans prefer the ballot box to the voting with your feet. It still depends on who you ask, though, especially if the protests in question are race based. Our resident social scientist, Neal Milner joined the show for a long view look at research on protests.

Sunset Jazz Concert on La Pietra’s Great Lawn: Shari Lynn

When Maui King Kahekili conquered Oahu, he built a Heiau on the Waikiki slope of Leahi. When Kamehameha the Great conquered Oahu, he tore down that Heiau. When King Lunalilo passed away, James Campbell bought the land in 1883 -- and when Walter Dillingham bought the site and built his dream home there on the slopes of Diamond Head in 1922, he named it after a beautiful Italian villa where he married his bride Louise. To many, this locale has always represented the perfect place to watch a sunset. To this day, that’s still the case! This morning we spoke with La Pietra School For Girls’ Music Director, Shari Lynn, about what we can expect from "Sunset Jazz," a benefit concert on Sept. 14 that will celebrate La Pietra's 50th anniversary.

If you've looked for an affordable rental in Hawaii, you know it's often a long and frustrating search. Now imagine you're a senior on a fixed income. Later today, representatives from the Maui County Council will walk around a property that could help some Maui seniors... and fairly quickly if the council approves the development under fast track provisions. Robert Carroll is the council's Vice Chair and chair of the land use committee.

What better way to get young people to aspire to excellence than ASPIRE itself? Actually, that’s an acronym for Attitude, Sportsmanship, Pride, Individual Responsibility, Respect, and Express. Now, put those in harmony with Hawaii’s unique opportunity for competition on the water and a passionate advocate for paddle sports, and you have the makings of success. We were pleased to have Coach, Teacher, Olympic Kayaker and eight time Na Wahine O Ke Kai Paddling winner Shelley Oates-Wilding joined the show with her thoughts.

Intro Music: Canoe by Small Black

Outro Music:  Step Into Liquid by Richard Gibbs
