The Long View, Liberal / Conservative Ideas: Neal Milner
You may believe that it's roughly accurate to say that liberals are more concerned with the increasing inequality than are conservatives. Conservatives still tend to think that a rising tide will float all boats—if you increase overall wealth, then inequality is no longer a problem because everyone is better off. But there are some conservative thinkers who don’t buy that argument and put their ideas somewhere between the liberal emphasis and the conservative philosophy. Social scientist and political analyst, Neal Milner, is back with some of that research for The Long View.

KKT Premieres “Shoyu On Rice”: Scot Izuka
Anyone who can survive the teenage years deserves our respect – it seems we at our most cliquish, insular, and judgmental during those turbulent times. Imagine then, the plight of a newly transplanted substitute teacher from Kansas, running into a language barrier she never expected: pidgin. As one character in Scot Izuka’s new play says of her: “She never goin’ understand local style ‘cause she wasn’t raised in Hawai’i” -- and that may just be true. Scot is the author of “Shoyu on Rice,” a new comedy at Kumu Kahua that has its world premiere performance tomorrow (8/21) and runs through September 21st.

Kona Pacific Public Charter School Breakfast Program: Chris Hecht
We often hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Yesterday, we spoke with a UH senior from Cambodia who said the first time his orphanage had the funds to offer the morning meal, everyone was up early because they were so excited. Some kids on Hawaii Island are now experiencing that kind of excitement. As of this week, the Kona Pacific Public Charter School is feeding all children breakfast in their classrooms to make sure they start the day right. The program is a partnership with Hawai‘i Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice. Chris Hecht is the school's co-founder and Executive Director and he joined the show via phone from Hawai‘i Island.

Hawaii Horse Expo: Nancy Jones
Horse people know it’s not enough to love the animals in your charge… you really have to dedicate yourself to their care, and be prepared to be very generous with your time. There’s always more to learn and that’s where this weekend’s Hawaii Horse Expo on Hawaii Island performs a valuable service with discussions of equine medicine, proper nutrition, and low-stress horsemanship, among many other topics. Along with this, the expo features the Ultimate Super Horse Junior Challenge. Nancy Jones is putting it all together, and she joined us by phone.
