As we heard last week from the state department of health, for the moment there are two ways to find out how your favorite restaurant rates for food safety: you can walk in and look for the green, yellow, or red placard, or call the DOH. In a time when most people walk around with the world on their hips or in their bag, an online check from a smart phone seems like a faster approach. So what would it take for travel and leisure sites like Yelp to integrate the depart of health information? Yelp's director of public policy, Luther Lowe, joined the show by phone from his San Francisco office to comment.

The late Gabby Pahinui was at his musical best in an informal back-porch kanikapila setting, and that relaxed feeling is always present in his music.  His influence is everywhere now, and it’s kept alive in an annual celebration of his legacy by his son Cyril, who has in his turn become one of the most influential musicians of his generation.    Cyril keeps the tradition alive with the annual Gabby Pahinui Waim?nalo Kanikapila.  The free event, now in its seventh year, is set for this Saturday at Waim?nalo Beach Park, and Cyril joined us in studio to talk about it beforehand.

Rising Property Taxes in Honolulu: Tom Yamachika

The reformulated variables of how a Honolulu home gets taxed came into reality as homeowners received their new tax bills. And while no one may be happy with escalating taxes, many nonresident homeowners of high end properties are especially upset over the message that if their property is valued at 1 million plus, they will have a higher tax bill. But should there be extenuating circumstances for some in this group, or do they just have to make a decision to keep or sell the property? Tom Yamachika is the president of the nonprofit Tax Foundation of Hawai`i and he joined the show to provide his thoughts.

How Hawai`i Became a State: Boyd Bond

Was Hawai`i’s inclusion in the United States of America a historical inevitability or the result of a series of events going back a century and more?   Hawaii was seen as a rich prize in the colonial era, and at least three European superpowers, Great Britain, France, and Russia, staked claims here. So why did the US end up with the prize?    Boyd Bond is a Hawaii Island historian who is giving a talk on the origins of statehood at Hilo’s Lyman Museum on August 18th at 7 p.m., and he joined us on the show this morning to tell us about it.

Intro Music: Lit From Underneath by Andrew Bird
