Experience Conducting Mars Research: Ross Lockwood
It's summer and many families are taking extended vacations. Some have rented a house or condo as their home base. However small it may be, it's probably larger than the 1000 square feet shared by six researchers on Mauna Loa to simulate a Mars mission. The three men and three women spent 120 days either inside a geodesic dome or out on the lava in a spacesuit for the purpose of a field study on team cohesion. The study ended last week and over the past few days they've been readjusting to life on their own and on the outside. Crew member Ross Lockwood worked on maintaining equipment and informally documented the experience in several Facebook picture albums.

Poetry has a close relationship to song, as an art form that needs to be heard aloud to be fully realized, yet live performances by poets are all too rare. Hawaii-based poet Kathryn Waddell Takara, whose work has earned her an American Book Award along with several regional honors, will read from her work tomorrow evening. It's part of a concert celebration of jazz and gospel music, and we asked her to join the show with a sample of her work.

League of Women Voter’s Reaction to Campaign Tactics: Ann Shaver
When you're involved with a campaign it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and sometimes, ideas that may have longer lasting ramifications. Last week, The League of Women Voters Hawaii warned of potential consequences of a gimmick from the campaign of Donna Kim. Voters were asked to take a picture of their ballot and send it to the campaign. League of Women Voter's president Ann Shaver joined the show with more of the league’s thoughts.

Outro Music: Blue Schwinn by Yppah
HCT’s Avenue Q (Kauai): Maile Speetjens
The stage musical “Avenue Q” is all about playing to your expectations and then standing them on their head. It’s a kids’ show, but it’s not; it’s a puppet show, but not really. You certainly never heard lyrics like these come from puppets before. Along the way, there are some ideas about coming of age that ask young people to reflect on where they’re going. Maile Speetjens is directing a Hawaii Children’s Theater production of Avenue Q, and she joined the show to tell us about it.
