Paula Helfrich Returns from Myanmar
Two years ago, life in Myanmar seemed changed and the advance toward democracy was noted around the world. A legitimate election, longtime opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi winning a seat in it, and markedly decreased media censorship gave the impression that Myanmar was a different place. In the time since, that difference also includes ongoing reports of violence between Myanmar's majority Buddhist population and Muslims. Former Hawaii resident Paula Helfrich now lives in Yangon and when she is back in the islands for a visit she always joins the show with an update.

Duke’s OceanFest: Brent Immelman
It’s doubtful that even Duke Kahanamoku could have foreseen what would happen to his beloved sport of surfing, which has long since gone international, affecting language, fashion and culture worldwide. For him, surfing was always about the joys of the sport itself, and that’s why it’s fitting that the annual festival in his honor, held each summer in Waikiki, should celebrate each of its many variations. Brent Immelman is the event director for The 13th annual Duke's OceanFest, and he joined the show via phone with more details. The 13th annual Duke's OceanFest will be held at venue sites throughout Waikiki, from Saturday, August 16, through Sunday, August 24th.

State Hospital System: Dan Brinkman
The Hawaii Health Systems Corp has a lot going against it: most of its 12 hospitals are in rural areas, this past session the legislature cut its appropriation for the system by 48 million, and Medicare also reduced its part of patient cost. Its facilities are old, the patients are poor and chronically ill. With growing holes in what is supposed to be a safety net, the HHSC is looking to the community for input. Heiva I Kaua`i: Sally Jo Manea
The Tahitian dance tradition has a unique feature… In solo performance, dancers have to be ready for anything. It’s an improvisational event that can’t be planned in advance, a tradition filed with excitement and visual splendor, and it’s being celebrated this weekend at the 13th annual Heiva I Kaua`i. Sally jo Manea is helping put the event together, and we talked with her at her Kaua’i home.
