Ulupono Initiative/ Hawaii Dairy Farms: Amy Hennessey

When last we left this story, Kauai residents were divided over their support of the proposed Hawaii dairy Farms. The story got more complicated a few weeks ago , when the nearest landowner filed a lawsuit claiming the dairy would pose a health and aesthetic threat to the owners' property, the Grand Hyatt. Nothing it said should happen until there was an environmental assessment. This week, the Department of Health weighed in and the Hawaii Dairy Farms Waste management Plan looks a little different. Amy Hennessey, is the spokesperson for the Ulupono Initiative backing the dairy and she joined us in our studio this morning to discuss the recent developments.

It was a time of tunics and capes, wimples and jerkins, and lots of men in tights… Most of us probably know most of what we have learned about Arthurian times in Merrie Old England from Monty Python, the comedy troupe that has made it impossible for us ever to look at the Age of Chivalry the same way again.   The costumes in Diamond Head Theater’s current production of Spamalot play an important role – they help us suspend our disbelief at the absurd goings-on in front of us.  Spamalot Costume Designer Kimmerie Jones had her work cut out for her, dressing these crazy characters, and she joined us this morning.

You can't miss Wally Amos...and it's not just the watermelon hat. He usually has a children's book in his hands and at the drop of that or any other hat, he'll start reading to kids ready to listen. He's been doing that for 35 years, and as much as his chocolate chip empires brought him fame, his actions say literacy has become his life. As school is starting next week, we thought we'd ask him what he’s seen working in school and at home to help kids learn to read.

Tension Release Exercise: Elizabeth Robinson

Few of us fully understand the impact of stress in our lives; it has a way of accumulating, bit by bit, and then manifesting itself in any number of ways, both in the mind and in the body.    It’s being studied more and more these days, and TRE’s, or Trauma Release exercises, are among the results of that research.  These exercises were developed in response to large-scale trauma events like wars and natural disasters.   Elizabeth Robinson says they can be applied, to welcome effect, in our everyday lives.  She’s teaching a workshop in TRE’s tomorrow at the Still and Moving Center In Honolulu and she joined us today to tell us about it.
