Restoring Family Ties at Kalaupapa: Valerie Monson
One of the many cruelties of the government’s historical treatment of Hansen’s disease patients was the forced destruction of families. Hundreds of families were forcibly separated over the course of more than a century when so-called “lepers” were exiled to Kalaupapa on Moloka’i. Valerie Monson of Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa has dedicated herself to restoring those ties, undertaking a monumental effort of historical research. She’s about to present those findings in an illustrated lecture in Honolulu, and she joined us by phone from Maui this morning.
