Hawaii State Hospital Update: Josh Green
Throughout the 2014 session and into this summer, a state senate panel has continued to probe the problems with the state hospital. Another hearing is scheduled for later this month. We last talked with Senator Josh Green, chair of the Committee on Health, in April. Since then, he's had a few investigative adventures at the hospital and joined us by phone for an update on what the panel has found so far.

The Actors’ Group Production of “Resistance!”: Brian Gibson
The fugitive slave act of 1850 forced the citizens of the free states to act as slave catchers and required them to return runaways to their master. It’s a law that brought the contradictions of a nation half slave and half free into sharp relief, as well as the focus of a new production from The Actors’ Group. “Resistance!” tells the story of a runaway slave who dared to resist an unjust law; Brian Gibson is the director, and he joined us in the studio this morning.

Red Hill Storage Facility Fuel Leakage Informational Meeting: Gary Gill
Months ago in the beginning of the year, the story broke that the Red Hill Underground Fuel Tank was suspected of leaking 27 thousand gallons. Two weeks ago, the Navy discovered more defects in the tank 15 tiny holes all potentially leaking fuel. The Navy has been working with the State Department of Health and the EPA to determine whether the potential for slow seepage has contaminated area groundwater. Next week, the Department of Health and the Navy will hold a public briefing. In advance of that meeting, the state's Deputy Director of Environmental Health Gary Gill joined us.

You can see bicycle safety issues played out every day in Hawaii. Somewhere, right now, cars and bikes are competing for a little bit of road, often with little knowledge of the rules that apply to one another. Making them understand those rules is critically important to Chad Taniguchi, Executive Director Hawaii Bicycling League; He's in the process of planning a weekend ride to ask bicyclists and motorists to safely share the road. He‘s was on the phone with us from Kaua’i.
