Interior Hearings on Federal Recognition of Native Hawaiians: Williamson Chang
The question of whether Native Hawaiians want federal recognition has drawn fire, but not just from those who oppose it. Throughout the statewide US department of interior hearings, some have criticized the process saying the same voices turn up at each from location. That's led to a new rule – area locals go first. UH law professor Williamson Chang has fueled the greater discussion on Hawaiian sovereignty and he returned to The Conversation this morning.

Shakuhachi (Japanese Flute) Master: Riley Lee
Wooden flutes and drums were probably among the first musical instruments ever created, and in their sound you can feel a link to the origins of musical expression. The shakuhachi came to Japan from China more than a thousand years ago as a length of bamboo with holes pierced to produce a five-note scale, and its simple design might deceive you – it can give the player a vast tonal palette, one that Riley Lee has spent his life mastering. He joined us this morning in our studio.

GVS Transmedia Accelerator: David Cunningham
You may remember that a couple of months ago, we talked about an opportunity for a select few to move their ideas to market. At the time we talked, Hawaii Island’s GVS Accelerator had already received over 80 applications. That number has grown, and the accelerator recently selected a handful of creative projects best positioned to make a profit. Program director David Cunningham was recently in Honolulu and I asked him for the final count.

Maui Art Camp Returns: Maggie Sutrov
Young children have so much to give, and they can be an endless source of energy. The potential is there, but how do you give it a focus? Running around on the playground is one way to let off that energy, but what about a more creative outlet? Maggie Sutrov is only too happy to take up the challenge. She’s running half-day summer sessions for young children at her Maui Art Camp, and she was on the line with us this morning.
