At a special meeting this week, the Maui County Council decided to override Mayor Alan Arakawa's line-item vetoes to their proposed version of the county budget. There were two reasons he disagreed: data suggested there would be a budget shortfall without cutbacks to the appropriations the council wanted to make, and that it simply wasn’t in the county's best interest to fund projects that were only in the planning stages.  We got a chance to talk with Council Chairwoman Gladys Baisa to ask how the Council made the decision to move ahead.

Bassist Benny Rietveld’s musical journey has taken him far from his Hawaii home, giving him the opportunity to interact with some of the most influential musicians of our time: Miles Davis, Sheila E., and his current employer, Carlos Santana. Coming back to the islands gives him the opportunity to re-connect with the local jazz scene and bring home some of what he has learned in the big world out there. He’s got a concert coming up at the Honolulu Museum of Art this Saturday, and he joined CR7 this morning to chat.

Business owners are always looking for ways to cut costs, and economies of scale often present a compelling argument to go big and increase efficiency. Not so for Kauai farmers. This week, those surveyed about their willingness to participate in a proposed central food processing hub concluded they didn’t want to bear the non-financial costs of collaboration. Jerry Ornellas is the President of the Kauai County Farm Bureau and he found the farmers’ decision curious. We talked to him earlier about why they found the idea of a food hub so unappealing.

Jazz and blues have always been the people’s music, and they’re still expanding their reach. These classic genres have found new audiences in their second century, reaching out to a host of up-and-coming musicians who are eager to learn their secrets.  That’s why Kauai’s Red Clay Jazz Festival offers workshops with its guest performers, along with jam sessions that foster the kind of spontaneous interaction that keeps those music forms alive.   Judy Arrigo is in the final stages of putting the event together, and she gave us an inside look at the process this morning.
