Follow Up on Trash Incinerator and Resolution 452: Margaret Wille
Is it time to re-think the way we dispose of the massive amounts of waste we leave behind? Are we still relying on obsolete technology and outdated solutions? It’s an issue that is roiling West Hawaii, as the County moves forward with a request for proposals to construct a waste-to-energy incinerator. Some Hawaii County Council members are working to call a halt to the project, saying it’s a big step in the wrong direction. Kohala Councilwoman Margaret Wille is one of them, and she joined the show from Hawaii Island.

Hawaii County Agricultural/Property Tax Breaks: Stewart Hussey

But the resultant tax breaks come with a catch – you have to be actively farming, and there’s reason to believe many are not. That’s why Hawaii County sent letters last week to 577 property owners asking them for proof, and it’s why a Big Island task force is looking into the issue. The annual loss to the County is estimated at $28 million, and task force member Stewart Hussey joined the show via phone to tell us more.
