Transgender Discrimination: Todd Simmons, Equality Hawaii
Our society is fond of referring to itself as a melting pot – and maybe the label is a misnomer. After we’ve said all the things we say to make ourselves feel good, we find that there are still people who live on the margins, far from acceptance, or even tolerance. That’s how it feels to many in the transgendered community, as we have been reminded by the recent lawsuit against the state by a transgendered employee of the Department of Public Safety. Todd Simmons is a board member of Equality Hawaii, an organization that exists to remind us that everyone matters, and he joined us in the studio this morning.

He will be displaying his work at the “Wailea on Wednesday” event at Lahaina Galleries in Maui tonight, and he spoke with us by phone today to tell us more about his latest inspiration.

Life Reimagined Initiative, AARP: Laurie Kaneshiro
We hear too many stories of people who lose their sense of purpose in their 60’s and beyond, find themselves with too much time or too little to do. Maybe retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, or maybe too many years in the same career can just lead to a sense of stagnation. Whatever the reason, it’s a shame to waste the years that should be the best years of all, and that’s the idea that drives AARP’s Life Reimagined Campaign. Laurie Kaneshiro is an interior designer and AARP Volunteer from Honolulu, and she was on the line today to tell us more.

Design Thinking: Diane Zachary
Design thinking, it’s the latest buzzword in business, but what does it really mean? Can it help to solve some of our more difficult problems in our community, education, government and more? How does this methodology help groups to collaborate and implement solutions that have received a collective vote of approval, and what does this mean for the island of Kauai? Diane Zachary is the president and CEO of the Kauai Planning and Action Alliance, a nonprofit group the serves as a facilitator to bring together stakeholders and create solutions to major community challenges on the garden isle. She joined us by phone to tell us more about how to apply design thinking to the problems in her neighborhood, and how this has worked for other issues in Maui already.
