The confluence of education bills, miscommunication, and special procedure refocused our attention over the past few days. But a lesson from Oklahoma might provide a better lesson in sustained educational reform. The public-private partnership for early education has a 15 year track record. Today political analyst Neal Milner is back with a different slice of the Long View.

There are some questions whose answers we may never know – but that’s no reason to stop trying.  Science continues to explore the secrets of the big bang and the creation of matter itself.  Those were the lofty goals of the largest and costliest experiment ever conducted.  It’s the subject of the documentary “Particle Fever,” and Tom Browder, University of Hawaii physicist, one of the many scientists who will be taking part in a discussion after the movie screens Friday night (7:40 pm) at Kahala Mall.

It was a case of perfect timing. On Earth Day, the Maui County Council passed a bill to keep recreational spaces tobacco free. It’s now on Mayor Alan Arakawa’s desk and according to the Surfrider Foudation he’ll sign it late this week. So while the law may soon say no butts on the beach, enforcing the ban may be a little more problematic. Maui Surfrider chair Lauren Campbell joined the show via phone.

How Hawaii Changed America: Tom Coffman

Hawaii remains the only American State that has ever been under martial law; it was during the Second World War Years, when the federal government suspected the local Japanese-American population of sedition.   But the years of martial law in Hawaii were not what anyone expected -- and what happened here during the war years changed Hawaii -- and changed America.  That’s the subject of Tom Coffman’s new book, and he joined the show this morning.

Intro Music: Can’t Stop by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Outro Music: It’s Been A Long Time by Harry James
