Not that long ago, the green community pronounced that the idea of burning wood to produce energy was not a good one. Now on Kauai a new plant will, in fact, burn wood to fuel a boiler to make steam to turn a turbine.  Kauai based journalist Joan Conrow finds all of it curious if not somewhat predictable.

Romi Beppu

When Romi Beppu watches her Honolulu Classical Ballet dancers in training, she can look back on a time, not that long ago, when she was first entering this unfamiliar and demanding world. She can also reflect on the relatively short time that passes between those first steps and performing in ensembles.  Her own career has taken her from local stages to international ones, as a principal dancer with companies such as American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet and Ballet West.   It’s a range of experience that allows her to pass along intangibles about live performance along with formal instruction. All those will come into play this Saturday, when her students at all levels, will “Spring Forward.”

The group says campaign finance reform needs to move beyond the Big Island experiment it says demonstrates how well public financing can work. But will lawmakers agree to resuscitate the bills and pull them to the floor for a vote? Kory Payne, the executive director of Voter Owned Hawaii, joined the show to share his perspective.

You might think the society that playwright Oscar Wilde inhabited was far from our own -- and in many ways, it was. His characters lived in a place of strict Victorian convention -- a foreign concept to modern mores...but as the characters’ very human foibles unfold, they begin to look very much like people we know.   Dennis McGraw is directing an encore performance of “The Importance of Being Earnest” with a student cast for the Kauai Performing Arts Company and h ejoined the show to give us a rundown.
