Rules Restricting Public Use of State Grounds: Alexandra Rosenblatt
Want to protest on state grounds? You’ll need a permit and according to the ACLU of Hawaii getting one is not as easy as it should be. For three years, the organization warned the State Department of Accounting and General Services that its requirements were too burdensome. Some examples include needing the government’s permission to protest and applying for a permit weeks in advance which doesn’t do much for spontaneity. Now there’s a lawsuit and Alexandra Rosenblatt is one of the attorneys representing the Hawaii’s ACLU.

Our food choices say a lot about us – where we came from, what we love and what we don’t, how we take care of ourselves. There’s always a story behind what we eat, and in Hawaii, ours is a story with a bit of history, a lot of good food, and plenty of laughs. Inevitable, perhaps, that the story would find its way to the stage, and Honolulu Theatre for Youth has done it with Grinds – the story of food in Hawaii. It’s a world premiere original show created by the HTY Company, and its artistic director, Eric Johnson, is on hand to tell us about it.

Health Connector Update: Tom Matsuda
If you’ve been counting the days until the deadline to sign up for Obamacare, you’re in luck. It’s today. Also today, the Senate Ways and Means committee will again grapple with whether the state should support the Connector with a pricetag of up to 15 million dollars. That would start next year when the exchange runs out of operating capital. Interim director Tom Matsuda is in Washington this week to appear at a Congressional hearing and he joined us by phone.

National Tropical Botanical Garden: Janet Leopold
Some of our favorite places in Hawaii are a little bit off the tourist radar – and they tend to be the places that remind us of the way the islands once were: abundant with natural beauty. For fifty years now, the National Tropical Botanical Garden has been promoting the beauty, and the diversity, of tropical plant life as it works to stem the tide of extinction. It’s a job that takes dedication, and Janet Leopold, Media Director,joined the show on the phone with a virtual tour.
