Clybourne Park Auditions at MVT: Vanita Rae Smith
It’s fun to trace the arc of a theatrical production from the audition process onward – it’s a way to be present at the creation, as it were. Vanita Rae Smith, director, is putting together a Mano’a Valley Theatre production of a challenging play called Clybourne Park. It takes a contemporary and irreverent look at the issue of race, and Vanita is putting out the call to actors up to the test.

Today is a big day for anti-tobacco folks. Two bills up for hearing would help -or hinder -the move to create parity with the taxation of tobacco products. As the first hearing was set for 8:30 this morning, we sat down with the Executive Director of the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii a few hours ago. We asked Jessica Yamauchi whether the real focus of one of the bills is a purchase barrier for a younger generation

We all love stories of people who succeed when nobody expects them to --- especially if they’re true. Maybe it’s because we’ve all been undervalued at one time or another. Rudy Puana certainly was, and maybe in his early years he brought that on himself: a tough kid from Kahalu’u – bad grades in school, no future. He went on to great success, saving his own life and the lives of many others in the process. He’s a boyhood friend of author Chris McKinney, co-author of the Red Headed Hawaiian, which tells the story of a misfit kid who became a respected surgeon.
