New York Times Journalist: Linda Greenhouse
Sunshine week starts today. The annual celebration of transparent government always happens the week of March 16, the birthday of America’s fourth president James Madison. He advocated for the power of knowledge and the people’s right to know about what happens in their government. For 40 years, award winning NYT journalist, Linda Greenhouse, told us a lot of what was happening in ours , in particular, in the US Supreme Court. She is one of the two 2014 Inouye Distinguished Chairs in Democratic Ideals and she’s in Hawaii this week.

Somebody should make a musical map of the world, showing how traders and intrepid explorers made their way to far-off places down through the centuries, carrying their musical influences with them. If you did, you’d see plenty of travel to and from our islands, importing such instruments as the ‘ukulele and exporting the sound of the steel guitar to some unlikely locales. Indian slide guitar virtuoso Debashish Bhattarcharya is both a beneficiary of that musical journey and an ambassador of future ones; he grew up in Calcutta, a port city where Hawaiian music had taken hold decades earlier. He’s teaming up for a unique fusion concert with Hawaii guitar virtuoso Jeff Peterson, and they’re both here this morning.

National Expert on Military Justice: Gene Fidell
In the past few years, there have been changes in the military - including the one we talked about in today’s Reality check. Washington attorney Gene Fidell tracks these changes and advocates for further change. For ten years he headed the National Institute of Military Justice and currently he chairs the Committee on Military Justice of the International Society for Military Law and the Law of War. He is in Hawaii this week sharing the 2014 Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals and he joins us now.

Running to Rapa Nui: Susie Stephen
England has to be one of the most-traveled societies the world has ever seen; between its imperial adventures and its tradition of exploration, this island nation has made its mark in every hemisphere. Susie Stephen is reviving the memory of one little-known expedition, to Rapa Nui in 1914, by retracing the route of the only woman in that adventure, a woman from Darlington, her English home town. It’s a running and bicycling cross-continental journey with an environmental message, and Susie is here to share it with us this morning.
