Kanikapila Sunday with Derrick Malama - October 22, 2017

Kanikapila Sunday features three hours of Great Hawaiian Music, including contemporary, traditional and hapa haole songs. You'll also hear slack key guitar and `ukulele instrumentals. Plus, the Kanikapila Sunday Classic! Tune in every Sunday with host Derrick Malama from 1:00-4:00 PM Hawai`i Time on HPR-1.

Hour One features brand new music from Kamanawa, the duo of Blaine Kia and Kalei Kahalewai, friends and musicians who have been performing together since 2008. Their debut album 'Huaka'i Ku'u Poli' is a tribute to their fathers. You'll also hear songs from Kalani Pe'a, Raiatea Helm, Keola Beamer, Kupaoa, Ho'okena, Kuana Torres Kahele, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Hoku Zuttermeister and Napua ('Puna Ku'u Aloha').

Hour Two introduces you to the trio of steel guitarist Gary Sardinha, slack key guitarist Jeff Peterson and Taiwan's Tsun-Hui Hung playing the erhu (Chinese two-stringed fiddle). Hear their version of 'Ka Wailele O Nu'uanu' from their new release 'Across the Sea.' Plus, songs from Na Leo, Mark Yamanaka, the Brothers Cazimero, Darlene Ahuna, Sean Na'auao, Robi Kahakalau, the Rev. Dennis Kamakahi ('Pua Hone') and the Lim Family.

Hour Three highlights the music of Mailani ('Green Rose Hula'), Kawika Kahiapo, Komakakino, Dennis Pavao ('Holei'), Lance Takamiya, Teresa Bright, Keauhou, Amy Hanaiali'i and a Kanikapila Sunday Classic from the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau!
