On episode 2 of my HPR + HIFF collab idea, our guest selections come from local Kanaka Maoli filmmaker, ??ina Paikai.
??ina's portfolio includes several award winning nationally televised documentaries during his long career with ??iwiTV such as Moananui?kea: One Ocean, One People, One Canoe, which HPR recently presented on O?ahu, Kaua?i, and Hawai?i Island.
??ina starred in the award winning short film Down On The Sidewalk In Waik?k?, directed by Justyn Ah Chong, which won second place for Best Made In Hawai?i Short at this year's HIFF Awards Gala. Currently, ??ina is in the process of producing a short narrative film about the life and music of the late aloha ??ina, George Helm, in Hawaiian Soul.
??ina's selections and commentary for tonight's show are centered around the main theme of roots and culture. From reggae to hip hop to Hawaiian music, each song is a thread being woven together to present a tapestry of musical influences throughout ??ina's life and career.
