After completing an inaugural flight from Kahului to Honolulu yesterday morning, Southwest Airlines is offering $29 fares for interisland flights.
The company will have four daily flights, each way, between Kahului and Honolulu. And it is planning to expand service to Kailua-Kona early next month.
The Dallas-based company currently offers a total of three daily flights from Oakland to Honolulu and Kahului since it began operating in the state last month.
Southwest spokesperson Brad Hawkins says demand is strong for flights to the islands, and the airlines plans to continue expanding its service to the state.
"On the fifth of May, we begin serving San Jose to Honolulu," said Hawkins. "On the 12th of May, we begin interisland service from Kona and Honolulu. And on Memorial Day weekend, we add San Jose to Maui."
Hawkins says these plans are the initial wave of planned flights for Hawai?i, and the company will soon announce service details from Sacramento, San Diego and Lihue.
Experts expect the increased interisland competition from Southwest will benefit consumers, and lower fares.
